Quadratic Transformations: See Shifts and Stretches Visually

Vertex form y=a(x-h)²+k: what a, h, and k each do. Predict, drag, then write the formulas back.

Quadratics reward “algebra + graph” thinking. In (y=ax^2+bx+c) and vertex form (y=a(x-h)^2+k), parameters click faster when you drag them than when you memorize a slide.

Three letters in vertex form

  • (a): opening direction and width (larger (|a|) → skinnier)
  • (h): horizontal shift
  • (k): vertical shift

Ask the class first: “What if (h) goes from 0 to 2?” Then check in visualization.

Write it back

After the transforms are clear, use the formula editor for general ↔ vertex form and paste into the handout. Predict → observe → symbolize sticks a bit better than steps alone.
